Tizi Ouzou

About

1489930345 305ced573fTizi Ouzou, city, northern Algeria, in the Great Kabylie mountain region. It lies in a narrow valley of the Wadi Tizi Ouzou, separated from the Wadi Sébaou valley by Mount Beloua. Named for the flowering broom (ouzou) that grows in the pass (tizi) connecting the two valleys
Tizi Ouzou is the capital of the Kabyle region. This region is inhabited by Imazighen also known as Berbers. They have always resisted Arab domination and continue to do so up this very day. French is still spoken almost everywhere in Tizi Ouzou, arabic less so.
The town itself is very special being on the very top of the Atlas Mountains, it is quite lively and there are a lot of friendly people to help you find your way. Tizi Ouzou is a good base for making daytrips. The Shrine of Sidi Beloua some 20 km to the north is a nice structure, and offers a great view over the mountainous agricultural area. Larba Nait Irathin is a market town 25 km to the east of Tizi and it has a French fort from the 1850s. The Djurdjura Mountains are also a prime attraction. The village of Tala Guilef offers good skiing during a couple of months in winter time, and dangerous rock climbing in summer

History

8274893117 c591077e09 bThe history of Tizi-Ouzou is inseparable from that of Kabylia and the rest of Algeria, but it is still a relatively new city. In the Ottoman period, the city was only a small town on the north by the massive Sidi Beloua and south by a bordj (strong) which housed a garrison of Janissaries. At that time, it is Dellys
Only with the arrival of the small French village of yesteryear became colonial village and small colonial town shortly after, especially after instatllation some utilities such jurisdiction, places of worship (the Saint-Eustache church next to the two traditional mosques: On Lalla Lalla Mamiya and Saida), a school for girls and one for boys, a hotel, a post office. The opening of the railway route Algiers-Tizi-Ouzou around 1888 precipitated the development of the city.
But the French occupation was also synonymous with armed conflicts, repressed insurrections, policy scorched earth...which contributed to a massive rural exodus from the villages of Kabylie to the city of Tizi-Ouzou.
After the independence of Algeria in 1962, the country experienced a major population boom. Tizi-Ouzou was no exception. Its population increased from 15 000 in 1960 to nearly 100 000 in 1998. Furthermore, the city of Tizi Ouzou was many political events theater. Most of them are related to cultural and identity claims brought longstanding Kabylia. Indeed, the Berber region of Algeria very badly forced Arabization policies imposed by the Algerian government.
Today, Tizi-Ouzou is one of the most important cities of Algeria. It is also one of the best equipped. It is very well served in terms of transport and administrative infrastructure, hospital, university...It is also a city which handles a significant portion of the country's market activity. Due to the high emigration Kabyle abroad, Tizi-Ouzou is also one of the strongholds of trade in the currency.
